Energy and energy consumption - lesson plan

The keywords for this project are transport and energy consumption. We will formulate hypotheses in relation to the topic and work with data we collect ourselves to verify or falsify the hypotheses.

Project start: in class

Lessons 1-3: preliminary discussion of issues and goals and introduction to data collection using My Tracks or similar GPS-based system. Click here to access the Introduction to data collection

TeamUP - building groups

Once data have been examined and hypotheses formulated, we need to set up groups using the TeamUp tool

Data Collection

Approximately one week is set aside for data collection. The data collected are uploaded to Google docs (spreadsheet) and Google Maps (this is built into My Tracks). If you use different tools, you may have to find alternative ways of uploading data to a common platform.

Group work on hypotheses and data processing

Lessons 4-6: the groups work with their hypotheses and the chosen themes (the wider perspectives of the hypothesis). This work will typically involve analysis of data, calculations, collecting additional information etc. The teams are required to write a log documenting the work they do. The work is documented in the video log of the TeamUp tools and the Group work space allocated to the group in a message forum.

Group work on presentations

Lessons 7-8: Work on final presentations of the results of the group's work where you present the hypothesis, considerations concerning data and data collection, examples of data, conclusions in relation to the hypothesis, perspectives on the topic/issues involved.

Presentations in class

Lessons 9-10: Each group presents their work followed by a discussion and concluding remarks.
